We want to celebrate Canada Day by celebrating some amazing Canadian women. The 20 names on the list below include some outstanding women who deserve our respect and appreciation for their accomplishments on behalf of others.

Chrystia Freeland Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs

Ms. Freeland is described as a champion of democracy, shown in her journalism, writing, and her political accomplishments.

Autumn Peltier Chief Water Commissioner for Anishinabek Nation

She is a globally recognized activist for clean water for First Nations and has spoken before the United Nations to raise awareness of water rights and community access to clean drinking water.

Caro Loutfi Executive Director, Apathy is Boring

She is an advocate for youth involvement in democracy, leads Apathy is Boring, and participates in a number of other not for profit organizations related to community engagement.

Annamaria Enenajor Lawyer, Advocate for Cannabis Decriminalization

She is an advocate for cannabis decriminalization and founded Campaign for Cannabis Amnesty working to obtain blanket pardons for cannabis possession charges.

Shari Graydon Speaker, Author, Advocate for Women

She has worked to improve the way women are represented in the media in Canada and is now teaching others to do the same.

Amanda Jette Knox Author, Speaker, Human Rights Advocate

She is a mental health advocate and a champion of LGBTQ+ rights and education. Her book love lives here tells the story of her transgender family.

Esi Edugyan Author

This great Canadian author has won the Scotiabank Giller Prize and was listed as a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize.

Robyn Doolittle Investigative Reporter

She is a journalist and author known for her national best seller about Mayor Rob Ford, as well as, her more recent investigation into police handling of sexual assault cases.

Celina Caesar-Chavannes Former Member of Parliament

She served as Member of Parliament for her riding of Whitby Ontario from 2015 to 2019, during which time she spoke out against systemic racism in the Public Service.

Jess Tomlin & Jessica Houssian Philanthropists

Founders of the Equality Fund providing funding for women’s organizations around the globe to support initiatives by women and girls to make the world a better place.

Rebecca Belmore Visual Artist

She is an internationally recognized multidisciplinary artist whose art is rooted in the realities of the lives of Indigenous peoples.

Attiya Khan Filmmaker, Anti-violence Activist

She has dedicated her career to helping women and children who have experienced domestic violence. Ms. Khan wrote and co-directed A Better Man, based on her personal experience in an abusive relationship, to further raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence.

Samantha Nutt Physician, Humanitarian

She is doctor who has worked in conflict zones around the world, and is the founder of War Child Canada and War Child US. These organizations provide assistance to children affected by armed conflict.

Buffy Sainte-Marie Singer, Songwriter, Educator

She is a singer/songwriter, who since the mid-60’s, has used her platform to speak out in protest against war, greed, and oppression.

Deepa Mehta Director, Filmmaker

She’s the internationally acclaimed director of the Elemental Trilogy: FIRE, EARTH, and WATER in which she explores human rights and social issues.

Dr. Theresa Tam Chief Public Health Officer of Canada

She is a physician specialized in immunization, infectious diseases, and emergency preparedness and has been leading us through this pandemic with calm and competence.

Sue Tomney Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Calgary

She is an advocate for gender equity and the creation of safe communities where women can receive the support they need to thrive.

Donna Strickland Physicist, Professor, Nobel Prize Recipient

She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 along with her PHD supervisor for research into lasers that has applications to both industry and medicine.

Louise Sertsis Entrepreneur, Advocate for Disabled People

She founded her own company and created a product that improves mobility for people with physical disability.

Rina Rovinelli Co-Founder of Speaker Slam

She is a Speaker Coach who co-founded Speaker Slam, and she created Platform a program empowering marginalized individuals to speak out and be heard.
