The first celebration was held in 1970 in the United States with teach-ins at colleges across the country.
An ad for the first ever Earth Day ran in the New York Times on January 18, 1970 and read “On April 22 we start to reclaim the environment we have wrecked. Earth Day is a commitment to make life better, not just bigger and faster; To provide real rather than rhetorical solutions … it is a day for looking beyond tomorrow. April 22 seeks a future worth living.”
In 1990 Earth Day went global and by now there are over 190 countries, thousands of organizations and more than one hundred million people participating every year.
